President Rumen Radev has refused to appoint former Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov as ambassador to Romania, Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva confirmed.

According to her, the reason for this is political. Now he is looking for an alternative proposal, as he believes that Radev will not change his position.

“A grave mistake on your part. There is no country in the world where a former foreign minister can be nominated and he doesn’t consider it an honor. I mean, I think there is no way I can make a better proposal for Romania. than Minister Mitov. “, Zaharieva told BNT.

Daniel Mitov’s name has also been linked in recent months as an EU special representative candidate for Libya.

In 2014, Daniel Mitov became foreign minister in the second interim government of President Rosen Plevneliev. He holds this post in the second government of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who ruled from late 2014 to early 2017.

The appointment of ambassadors is made at the proposal of the government and by presidential decree, which requires the coordination of candidacies.

Due to the tense relations between the government and the head of state, the process has become very difficult in recent years.

In recent weeks, the process stalled after the government agreed to send former head of state, foreign policy secretary Nikolai Milkov, as ambassador to Paris.

However, negotiations on the nominations for another 5-6 ambassadors are still ongoing.
