A Greek Orthodox priest was shot and killed today in a church in the center of the French city of Lyon, Reuters reported.

The perpetrator fled immediately after the attack, police and eyewitnesses said.

The priest was shot twice in the abdomen while closing the church. The crime was committed around 4 pm French time. The priest received emergency medical attention at the scene because his life was in danger. He was then taken to hospital in serious condition.

According to police sources, the priest is of Greek origin and managed to tell the paramedics that he did not recognize the attacker.

It is not yet known why the attacker fired, Mayor Gregory Dusse said, quoted by Reuters.

According to a Greek official, the priest’s name is Nikolaos Kakavelakis.

The crime comes two days after the last brutal attack in France, in which a man entered a church, beheaded a woman and killed two others in Nice. Two weeks ago, teacher Samuel Patti was brutally murdered in Paris after showing his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson on freedom of expression.
