The traffic police of Sofia, Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, Ruse and Lovech will receive a new “super camera” which, in addition to speeding, will also detect incorrect overtaking, Nova TV reported. These are portable devices similar to the already known tripods.
The Interior Ministry has not yet said when the devices will work, specifying that they are currently being tested. It is not ruled out that the cameras will be operational next week, when the next “Speed” campaign will take place throughout the country.
Like the tripods already in use, they can accurately determine the speed of any vehicle, even on a three-lane highway, both day and night.
In front of Nova TV, Inspector Lachezar Bliznakov of the Traffic Police commented that electronic fines issued for speeding are constantly growing. “This speaks of poor driver discipline and we are not happy,” he added.
Currently, the traffic police have a total of 205 speed control devices. Among them are 22 stationary radars, 32 tripod cameras and 148 mobile stations in police cars. However, it is unknown how many of them work.
