The case of the brutal murder of Assistant Professor Stefan Neykov in Plovdiv reaches the Supreme Court of Cassation. Defendant Iliya Stoichkov was found guilty of deliberately killing Stefan Neykov in a particularly painful manner on July 2, 2018.

He also stole a gold chain from the victim. Neykov was found dead on July 2, 2018 near a military hospital after being beaten and raped with a baseball bat in the town of Orizare.

The main motive for the murder is a relationship between Elijah’s wife, Ivanka, and Stefan, who spent part of her undergraduate studies with the 71-year-old associate professor. He was retired but worked as a research associate at the Institute for Plant Genetic Resources in Sadovo before he was assassinated.
Iliya Stoichkov was sentenced to 20 years in prison and compensation to the victim’s relatives amounting to BGN 220,000.

In mid-August of last year, he again appeared before the magistrates, appealing the harsh sentence.

Stoichkov demanded that the qualification of the act be changed. Neykov’s relatives, meanwhile, also appealed the sentence. They demanded life imprisonment for their killer. Such was the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, which presented a protest.

In the end, however, the appellate judges also found Stoichkov guilty. However, the magistrates reduced his sentence by 2 years, writes TrafficNews.

The case is referred to the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. Even before the New Year, Iliya Stoichkov’s defense, represented by lawyer Krassimir Eldarov, filed a complaint against the ruling of the Plovdiv Court of Appeal.
