At the end of 2020, the money in circulation reached BGN 21,241.0 million, according to data from the Bulgarian National Bank.

For one year, money in circulation increased by 11.2 percent, or BGN 2,136.1 million. In the period of a previous year its increase was 10.3 percent.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, money in circulation increased by BGN 1,356.7 million, or 6.8 percent, compared to the end of September. Its increase is 2.4 percentage points higher than that reported for the same period in 2019. The largest increase in money in circulation in the last quarter of 2020 was recorded in December: 929.1 million BGN, which is a growth of 4.6 hundred in comparison. with November.

At the end of 2020, the share of banknotes in the total value of money in circulation was 97.71 percent. The average value of banknotes in circulation at the end of 2020 was BGN 37.89, representing an increase of BGN 0.21 on a quarterly basis. Over a period of one year, their value has increased by BGN 0.95, or 2.6 percent, due to higher growth rates in the number of BGN 50 and 100 banknotes, according to the Central Bank.

At the end of last year, the share of coins in the value of money in circulation was 2.28 percent. The average value of the outstanding coin in circulation is 0.18 BGN and remains unchanged compared to the end of 2019.

At the end of last year, there were 547.7 million banknotes in circulation, equivalent to 32.7 million pieces, 6.3 percent more than at the end of September. At the end of 2020, the 50 BGN banknote had the largest share (32.37%) in the total number of banknotes in circulation, as of December 31, 177.3 million banknotes with this denomination were in circulation .

Over a period of one year, the number of banknotes in circulation increased by 43.3 million (8.6 percent) and their value by BGN 2,118.3 million (11.4 percent). The trend of a higher annual growth rate in cash circulation of the number of high-denomination banknotes (50 and 100 BGN) is maintained, according to the BNB.

At the end of 2020, 2,722.1 million exchange coins were in circulation, and in one year their total number increased by 123.4 million (4.7 percent) and their value by BGN 24.1 million (5, 2 percent). At the end of 2020, pennies had the largest share (29.04%) in the total number of coins in circulation. As of December 31, 790.5 million coins with this denomination were out of BNB boxes. The smallest part (2.57 percent) is the number of coins with a face value of BGN 2.

In the last quarter of 2020, a total of 213 counterfeit Bulgarian banknotes in circulation were seized at the BNB’s National Analysis Center. Compared to the third quarter of 2020, there are 59 more. During the same period, the BNB seized counterfeit foreign banknotes as follows: 184 euros, 36 US dollars and six banknotes of other currencies.
