The Ministry of the Environment and Water has demanded that a state of emergency be declared in Burgas due to lack of water.

The Kamchia dam is exhausted and according to current estimates, the water for the city would only reach the month of May 2021. A possible solution is the construction of water pipes that lead from the Poroy and Aheloy dams to the Kitka diversion , but for this purpose it is necessary to urgently start repairs. That is why it is necessary to declare a state of emergency.

The forecast and the request are recorded in the schedule for the use of the waters of the complex and significant dams in December 2020, published yesterday on the website of the Ministry of the Environment and Water.

The data in it shows that 6.18 billion cubic meters of water are discharged from the Kamchia dam in December with a total volume of 233.5 billion cubic meters, 108.59 billion available cubic meters of water and an available useful volume of 32.59 billion. cubic meters of water.

“Kamchia HPP can process only the volumes of water used for drinking and domestic water supply. The volumes of water used by the turbine enter only the Kamchia ETAP.

Given the end of the summer season and the constant trend of decreasing inflows, the quantities allowed for the supply of drinking and domestic water are even more limited, of which operators were notified in advance.

In case of entry for the average humidity conditions of the year, the schedule will be changed in due time and some of the restrictions will be removed.

ViK OOD Varna and ViK OOD Burgas have been informed that they must take steps to switch to alternative water sources, as in the case of the planned reduced consumption and in the absence of influx to the dam, there will be water for drinking water supply until May 2021.

By decision of the Council of Ministers of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, the repair of the Poroy and Aheloy dams and the construction of water pipes leading to the Kitka diversion were assigned.

In order to start the procedure as soon as possible, given the short time frame for construction and resource depletion of the Kamchia Dam, the only possible way out, which will allow Vik Burgas to meet these deadlines, is the introduction of a state of emergency. “

Today, the Minister of Environment and Water, Emil Dimitrov, urgently met with the regional administration regarding the impending crisis. Later, he announced that “there will be no water crisis in the Burgas region.”

A 10-kilometer water supply network will be built to connect the Aheloy and Poroy dams with the Burgas diversion. Supply piping must be completed by February 20. This could happen over time if the district administration declares a state of emergency. It would allow the acceleration of activities, Dimitrov explained, adding that with a decision of the Council of Ministers the ownership of “Aheloy” and “Poroy” will be transferred to the regional administration in Burgas.

Last week, Dimitrov told parliament that the city was in danger of running out of water next year because the Kamchia dam was empty. Soon after, Vik Burgas announced that he had a conceptual design ready for supplying reserve quantities of drinking water from the Poroy and Aheloy dams. The value of the project is BGN 60 million. The money is provided by the state company Vik Holding. In just a few hours, the eco-minister changed his mind and told Prime Minister Boyko Borissov that there would be no water crisis.

Varna will be supplied with water from the “Kitka” bypass, ie it will be connected to a reserve water source.

The price of water in Varna will not increase, Dimitrov said.

The Ecology Minister stated that the provision of reserve water supply for the Burgas region and the southern coast of the Black Sea is a project that will ensure that there is no water crisis for the next 50 years.
