The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared two Russian diplomats accredited in our country persona non grata. The Russian embassy was notified with a note. The two diplomats have 72 hours to leave our country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a letter had been received from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria with a decree suspending the pre-trial proceedings against the two diplomats who had collected information that constituted a state secret for publication in a foreign state or organization.
Pre-trial proceedings against Russian citizens have been suspended because they enjoy diplomatic immunity.
This is the third group in the last year, and only since the beginning of the Attorney General’s term there are already four Russian spies expelled from Bulgaria.
This is not the first spy scandal with a Russian connection to break out in our country.
In early September last year, Russian leader Nikolai Malinov was arrested and charged with espionage. According to the prosecution, his correspondence spoke of the need for a geopolitical reorientation of Bulgaria, with the help of influential circles in Russia.
Former KGB general Leonid Reshetnikov is banned from entering Bulgaria for the next 10 years. A day later, businessman Konstantin Malofeev received such a ban.
In late October, a first secretary at the Russian embassy was declared persona non grata after prosecutors announced that he had offered bribes in exchange for state secrets. Reciprocal actions on the Russian side followed.
In January this year, two more Russian diplomats were given a deadline to leave our country, again due to evidence that they had collected information that was a state secret.

Within its competence, the Foreign Ministry took the necessary actions in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the ministry said.
