Speech by Minister Kostadin Angelov on the occasion of the Bulgarian Doctor’s Day:
“Today is the Bulgarian Doctor’s Day. The Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Ivan Rilski the Wonder Worker – patron saint of the Bulgarian people.
It is a party, but the festive feeling seems to be absent. He has been displaced by concerns and anxieties about the coronavirus. Most of my colleagues today will not celebrate, they will be at work, in hospitals, in ambulances, in consulting rooms.
If in this pandemic I am afraid of something, it is that the Bulgarian doctor does not use the understanding he deserves.
I want everyone to realize that doctors are not fighting the pandemic, they are fighting for our health. They fight for each of their patients, they do it until the last, giving the best of themselves. There is nothing solemn about this, but there is everything that we must respect and appreciate.
Every year, doctors lose their lives infected with the diseases of their patients. The difference this year is that we all learned their names, got acquainted with their stories, walked into their workplaces and homes, heard the stories of their colleagues and family. Bulgaria lost thirteen of its doctors to COVID-19. These are Dr. Julian Stamatov, Dr. Nelly Pandova, Dr. Borislav Ivanov, Dr. Iliana Todorova-Ivanova, Dr. Dimitrinka Raleva, Dr. Ivelin Markov, Dr. Musa Vaklyov, Dr. Emil Vaklyov, Dr. Marin Marinov, Dr. Milan Parvanov, Dr. Asen Senkov, Dr. Petranka Lishkovska, Dr. Georgi Hubchev.
These colleagues will not celebrate. They left because they chose the patients in front of them.
We must all be responsible and abide by the measures. In this way we will protect ourselves and our families, we will preserve the Bulgarian doctors. We owe it to them.
This is not a time for prejudice and narrow opinions, to underestimate and ridicule, to measure academic qualifications and cite scientific articles. This is not the time to politicize. It is time for humanity.
