Servicemen who speak English or French will now receive a fixed monthly supplement to their salaries. This provides for a new ordinance of the Ministry of Defense, published for public discussion.
The minimum amount of the supplement will be BGN 20 in foreign language, the maximum – BGN 40. The exact amount will depend on the English or French language exams covered under the NATO STANAG standard, as per ministry ordinance.
The specific unit commander will determine which military to receive from foreign language assignments.
The right to supplements for the command of English or French will also be held by officials of the Ministry of Defense, who are not appointed by law for the official. Those sent to missions abroad will also be paid. However, the foreign language allowance will be suspended in the event of maternity leave or adoption of a child, as well as in the event of unpaid leave, the draft ordinance provides.
The military has received foreign language allowances so far, but their size has not been fixed, but determined by order of the Minister of Defense. Now that right is gone.
BGN 950 is the lowest starting base salary in the army that regular soldiers receive. It can reach up to 1,500 BGN. A colonel’s salary is 3,000 BGN.
In addition to their basic salaries, the military receives a number of allowances based on their tasks and the unit they serve, as well as a portion. The biggest additions are for fleet fighter pilots and divers.
