The lowest temperatures in January in our country will be between minus 15 and minus 10 degrees, on the Black Sea coast – around minus 5 degrees, and the highest temperatures will be between 10 and 15 degrees. This was announced for BTA by Krassimir Stoev – weather forecaster at the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology / NIMH /.
He predicts that in January the average monthly temperature in Bulgaria is expected to be around and above the norm, that in northern Bulgaria and in the highlands it is between minus 3 and 0 degrees, on the Black Sea coast, in the lowlands of Upper Thrace and in the valley of the river Struma. 0 to 3 degrees, and in mountainous areas, between minus 8 and minus 3 degrees. The monthly amount of precipitation will be around and above the norm, which is between 30 and 60 liters per square meter, in the mountains and in the southernmost regions, between 60 and 110 liters per square meter.
In January the dynamics of atmospheric processes will increase. During the first ten days the temperatures will be higher than usual, although in the second half of the period they will drop. At the beginning of the month, in front of a Mediterranean cyclone, masses of warm air will move from the south. The clouds will tear, in some places until it’s sunny. By January 4 and 5, in many parts of the country there will be rainfall, in the mountains at more than 1700 meters, of snow. Temperatures will drop. During the last days of the period, cloudy weather will prevail and in many places there will be rain, which in the north and west of Bulgaria will turn to snow.
During the first days of the second decade, the cold will continue. A precipitation situation will be created and in most of the country it will snow and form a layer of snow. During the last days of the period, temperatures will increase relatively. There will be a chance of precipitation around January 18.
In the third decade of January, temperatures will be close to normal. There will be a chance of precipitation around January 22, January 25 and at the end of the month.
According to the NIMH climate report, January is the coldest month of the year in Bulgaria and generally determines the nature of winter: mild, normal or harsh. The weather is usually cloudy and foggy. When cold air invades from the northwest and northeast, snow falls and blizzard conditions are created, especially in northern Bulgaria. The average number of days with snow in northwestern Bulgaria is about 20 and on the Black Sea coast from 2 to 5. Strong winds often blow in the mountains, usually from the north-west and south-west. In January the greatest meteorological anomalies were registered in our country. The lowest temperatures in most of the country have been reached during the clarification of the Arctic air; the absolute minimum for the country is -38.3 degrees below zero, measured in Trun in 1947. In January there are intense heats, in which temperatures have risen to 20-23 degrees.
According to the astronomical report, in early January the sun in Sofia rises at 7 hours 57 minutes and sets at 17 hours 03 minutes. The duration of the day is 9 hours and 05 minutes. At the end of the month the sun rises at 7 hours 42 minutes and sets at 17 hours 37 minutes. The duration of the day is 9 hours and 55 minutes.
