The director of the Macedonian News Agency was fired after insulting Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva. Zoran Ivanov wrote on Twitter that former Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, who is the wife of current Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakic, and Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zahariye.
In NOVA, Ekaterina Zaharieva announced that such statements were the main reason why Bulgaria refused to support the EU talks in North Macedonia.
Balkan sexism and hate speech have no place in the European Union, said in the study of “Hello, Bulgaria”, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of our country – Ekaterina Zaharieva.
“This is the main reason why we cannot say ‘yes’ at the moment, because when you not only tolerate but stimulate for 30 years a state policy based on pure hatred towards the Bulgarian people and state, there is no way to start negotiations for the European Union “Because this contradicts European values,” Zaharieva explained.
Zaharieva: Balkan sexism has no place in the EU
The neighborhood agreement has been violated dozens of times, Zaharieva added. Therefore, North Macedonia has unilaterally terminated the work of the historical commission, commented its member from the Bulgarian side, Professor Kiril Topalov.
“In several respects, the agreement is not being fulfilled, even if you want in this period, a common history, so the agreement is clearly regulated, they do not give a word,” said Professor Kiril Topalov, former Bulgarian ambassador to the North Macedonia.
Bulgaria’s veto has remained isolated in Europe due to the refusal of Hungary and Poland to support the EU budget, according to Vessela Cherneva of the European Council on Foreign Relations. There is the possibility of a dialogue at the end of the year, within the German Presidency of the Union.
“I think that the two parties should try to reach an agreement in the remaining four weeks. This agreement is not impossible, in my opinion it must be very specific, it must be related to specific steps, to have a mechanism by which these steps can be monitored and reported, ”said Vessela Cherneva of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
Bulgaria stands firm in Macedonia, but is ready for negotiations
This would give North Macedonia the opportunity to secure a date this year for its first intergovernmental conference to chart a European path for the country.
“We are the ones who love them the most, because we know that their stay outside the EU is detrimental to them and to us and to everyone,” said Professor Kiril Topalov.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a telephone conversation with his Albanian counterpart Edi Rama, during which the Prime Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for Albania’s accession to the EU. Borissov pointed out that our country has insisted and wanted the Republic of North Macedonia to become part of the Community, but “such a commitment is not observed by Skopje.”
