If we continue at this rate, the era of pandemics awaits us and COVID-19 is a warming, said in the program “This Saturday” Dr. Heliana Dundarova of the Institute for Research in Biodiversity and Ecosystems of the BAS. He is part of an international group of experts that has produced a report on the risk assessment of new pandemics.
According to her, the unregulated export of wild animals must be limited, contact between domestic and wild animals must be limited, the use of large areas for agriculture and oil production must be stopped, and the exploitation of the ocean must also be stopped.
The COVID-19 pandemic is animal in nature and is spreading globally. This virus was probably not pathogenic to humans from the beginning. Man has entered the space of these animals, the bats, and thus we arrive at the current situation, explained Dr. Heliana Dundarova.
The modern age dates back to the 19th century and is the sixth pandemic since then. Most of them are zoonotic in nature, but they don’t happen by accident, the scientist said.
“In recent centuries, man has changed the landscape of terrestrial ecosystems. Contact between farm animals is directly related to wildlife in most parts of the world, as wild lands are used for agriculture in Asia and Africa. This causes a lack of food resources for wild animals, which seek food from pets, come into contact and stressful situations occur. Pets assimilate the pathogen from nature and we, as end consumers, also get it ”, explained Dr. Heliana Dundarova.
