The driver who struck the 2-year-old “Iliyantsi” boy in Sofia was admitted to hospital with a heart attack, Nova TV reported. He is in the Alexandrovska Hospital in danger of death.

The Sofia City Court had to decide whether to keep him in permanent custody after he was charged with causing wrongful death. However, the prosecutor’s office decided not to file an application for arrest in court until the driver’s health improved.

The driver is a Syrian citizen with permanent resident status. No prior violations.

“He has lived in Bulgaria since 1992, is based in the country, works, his children were born here, they graduated from Bulgarian schools,” said Anna Popova, a lawyer for the detained driver. He himself feels very strong emotional pain and guilt for what happened, because this is a tragedy that has happened to both families, ”he said.

“He actually provided first aid when the accident happened. He personally called 112, held the child with one hand, but unfortunately we know what the result is,” Popova added.
