In Vratsa they still remember Christmas 2015 as the bloody one. Then, just before the holy Christian holiday, the town of Dobrolevo was shaken by the news of a brutal murder, and for days it was shrouded in a complete mystery.
In the early morning of December 23, local grain producer Kuncho Kunchev was found dead in his home amid a pool of blood and multiple stab wounds. The sinister news spread quickly and the inhabitants of Dobrolevo were shocked by the murder of their respected villager and could not explain who the man was who stabbed him with his knife, inflicting more than 16 blows.
Locals told investigators that the brutal murder was not the work of a villager and they were convinced that if found, the killer would be an alien. It will turn out later that they were wrong in their judgment, but only up to a point. In one voice, the villagers share that Kunchev has not hurt anyone, helped everyone in need in the village, and saw only good things from him.
In the village of Dobrolevo in Vratsa, they still remember the brutal murder of their village companion.
For many years Kuncho Kunchev lived and worked in Vratsa and retired as the director of the city’s welding school. He then decided to start farming and renting or buying his own land from the fertile fields on the land of his hometown Dobrolevo.
His company acquires about a thousand hectares, which he sows mainly with cereals. It was not among the region’s large grain entrepreneurs and had little to do with them, say people familiar with its existence. The farmers of Vratsa know Kunchev as a very accurate man who tried at all costs to avoid even the inevitable conflicts in the industry. The 74-year-old stayed away from the high aspirations of some grain producers, who wanted more land at all costs and often did not choose the means to achieve this goal.
Kunchev hired many temporary or permanent workers at his company, sometimes more than he really needed. He was angry that the young people in the village were unemployed and he tried to help them in every way.
The night before the murder, as usual, Kunchev went to the company corral. He observed how the machines were winterized and talked for half an hour with the guards, who were on night duty. He didn’t seem worried about anything, they agreed on what to do the next day and he went home safe and sound.
Kunchev mainly lived alone at home, while his wife Lyudmila was more often at her Vratsa apartment to look after the grandchildren. According to his neighbors, he rarely closed the front door and could be entered at any time. Local Apache victims warned him to be more careful, but he only waved his hand.
The farmer had a legally owned and registered pistol, and as a member of the local hunting party he also had a rifle. He probably expected the thieves to barely surprise him, which is why he always left his gun somewhere near him when he went to bed. He said he would hardly use it for shooting, but he could at least respect the Apaches.
Late at night, Lyudmila Kuncheva called her husband’s mobile phone several times, but he did not answer. This bothered her, but she waited a while and it started ringing long and hard. However, the man did not respond during the night, and the concerned woman called her relative, who lived not far from Kunchevi’s home, to come find out what was going on.
The neighbor went in the morning and found a terrible picture. The farmer lay naked as if he were asleep on the rug by his bed in a pool of dried blood. There were many wounds on Kunchev’s body and he showed no signs of life. The frightened woman immediately woke up her neighbors, called the police, the mayor and Lyudmila Kuncheva, who was anxiously waiting.
On the first inspection, forensic scientists noted that the door of the house was not violated and that the killer did not break into it. A cartridge from the pistol was found near the victim, but there was no sign of the weapon itself.
The elderly farmer was probably surprised by his uninvited nightly guest in his sleep, and had no chance to resist or use his weapon. This is the version of the coroners, who, apart from the many cut wounds, did not find any signs of struggle during the examination of the body.
Investigators did not find the brutal murder during a general search of the house and the surrounding area and the weapon with which the killer had slipped away, but suggested that it was a fairly sharp and long knife that inflicted many fatal wounds. . The most likely version for forensic scientists is that the night visitor broke into stealing, but after Kuncho woke up, he ran into him with a knife.
A week after the tragedy, criminal investigators from Vratsa and the capital discovered the perpetrator of the murder and arrested him. It turned out to be a gypsy who had moved from the town of Malorad a year earlier. At the home of Marian Dimov, then 35, they found the firearms and weapons that were missing from Kunchev’s home and one of the knives with which the murder was committed.
According to the indictment prepared after Kunchev was killed, the bandit stole BGN 460, a pistol and other items for around BGN 2,000. Dimov broke into the victim’s home with the intention of robbing him and stabbed him 16 times in the body. Two of these punctures were fatal, hitting the lungs, and Kunchev died of acute cardiovascular failure.
After many vicissitudes surrounding the case, in 2017 the Vratsa District Court sentenced the killer to 20 years in prison. Dimov pleaded guilty and therefore reduced the expected life sentence in such cases.
However, a few months later, the Sofia Court of Appeal released on bail the killer of agricultural producer Kuncho Kunchev from the village of Dobrolevo in Vratsa. The reasons for the killer’s release were due to procedural violations in the preparation of the indictment by the Vratsa District Prosecutor’s Office.
In Dobrolevo and the surrounding villages, there was well-founded fear among the elders and outrage at the unexpected twists of justice. A petition was launched among the residents of Dobrolevo with a request to evict Marian or detain him again behind bars.
And only in March 2018, the murderer Dimov again stood on the pier in front of the district court in Vratsa. Then it became clear that of the money raised by the murdered Kanchev, Marian gave 10 leva to buy sweets to the gypsies in the neighborhood, and buried the rest in her yard. He hid the stolen hunting rifle and pistol from Kuncho’s home in an unusable fireplace in his home.
The new panel put the killer back in pre-trial detention and later sentenced him to 20 years in prison for the brutal murder and robbery. This time, the higher court upheld the sentence and Marian Dimov was returned to prison.
