Athletic Bilbao won the Spanish Super Cup by beating Barcelona 3-2 in extra time.

The clash turned into a true thriller, after the “Basque lions” tied the result twice. In the first case, it happened immediately after Antoine Griezmann’s first goal, and the second half was in the last minute of regulation time, when the Catalans were already seen as winners. In the first sequel, a magnetic blow from Inyaki Williams paralyzed Mark-Andre ter Stegen, who was rendered completely defenseless.

Thus, Marcelinho graduates won the third trophy of the competition in the club’s history. The last one dates back to 2015, when the rival was Barcelona.

Of note is the fact that the Basques performed a Herculean feat in the tournament, surpassing the two hegemonies in Spain: Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The first 10 minutes passed at a relatively calm pace, without a clear advantage for either team and without goal positions.

In the 25th minute Messi crossed with a free kick, but Simon caught.

2 minutes later Kappa made an attractive and dangerous shot at Ter Stegen’s goal, but the German intervened and took a corner. After his performance, however, Jordi Alba cleared.

In the 37th minute Messi shot with his left foot into the upper right corner, but the leather ball flew inches off the crossbar.

In the next attack by the “Basque Lions” Raúl García caught a very clumsy ball with his head in the penalty area and, respectively, failed to adequately threaten the Catalans’ door.

In the 40th minute, Messi sharpened his attack with an excellent pass to Alba, who uncovered Griezmann in the penalty area and the world champion transferred Simon to the ground 1: 0.

The initiative of the symbolic hosts, however, did not last long. Oscar de Marcos broke away from the defense, on the verge of ambush after an Inyaki Williams cross and narrowly edged Ter Stegen 1: 1.

Messi tried to cross with a direct free kick at the beginning of the second half, but it did not pose a danger to the defensive axis of the “Basque Lions”.

In the 50th minute, Danny García tried his luck from long distance, but his goal betrayed a few inches from the left post.

3 minutes later, the Barça captain committed a technical foul from the front against the door, but the ball flew in agony near the left side post.

In the 57th minute, Raúl García headed in 1: 2 when Muniain passed a free kick, but after a review with the VAR the goal was disallowed by a fine ambush.

Ten minutes later, Inyaki Williams took advantage of a poor clearance by Araujo, but the nine guests were imprecise at point blank range.

In the 77th minute, a quick double pass between Alba and Dembélé brought the ball into a cross from the Spaniard’s left wing and Antoine Griezmann was back in the right place at the right time to give his team the lead again, scoring close of 2: 1.

In the 90th minute Vialibre intercepted with his left foot after a cross from a Muniain free kick and drew 2: 2 from close range in the penalty area, getting ahead of the defense.

In the fourth minute of the first overtime, a virtuous performance by Inyaki Williams caught Mark-Adre Ter Stegen, who was exposed on the edge of the penalty area and turned the ball in the upper left corner inescapable after the assistance of Muniain.

In the 105th minute, Núñez tried to hit the far post with his ankle after a cross from the left wing, but failed to aim the leather ball.

In the 112th minute, Vezga and Núñez collided in the penalty area and were unable to head out with maximum precision.

Lionel Messi was sent off in the last moments after a reckless shot without the ball on an opponent. It was also the first red card for the Argentine as a player for the Blaugranas and only the third in his entire career.
