Tensions between protesters and police in front of the old building of the National Assembly. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, driving out hundreds of protesters by truck, leaving a rally in Independence Square.
Several people, led by Father Dionysius, tried to cross the chain of police officers and were arrested. After the policemen were shot with vuvuzelas, heavily equipped police reinforcements arrived.
The protesters tried to persuade the police to remove their helmets and shields and let them pass in the direction of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, but the police refused. Disgruntled citizens threaten to stay in front of the old parliament building. They claim that the police do not have the necessary order from the mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, and illegally restrict the right of protesters to worship in front of the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier on the 112th anniversary of Bulgaria’s independence . .
The third protest, declared “Great Popular Uprising”, takes place today coinciding with the 112th anniversary of Independence. This is the 76th consecutive day of anti-government events.
A protest march started at around 9 pm towards Orlov Most and blocked the road junction. The police presence in the center of Sofia has increased.
