The Bulgarian men’s basketball team qualifies for the European Championship for the first time in 10 years! Rosen Barchovski’s boys won in a real drama the direct clash with Latvia with 66:65 (15:17, 21:23, 15:19, 15: 6) in the Arena Riga pavilion and sealed the place for the Old Continent championship, to be held next year.
Dee Bost played a great game and finished with 18 points. Pavlin Ivanov stood out with 15, who played a major role in the success, after scoring three consecutive triples in the fourth quarter. Dimitar Dimitrov also played strong, finishing with 12 points, and Chavdar Kostov scored 11.
The national team did not have their biggest star Alexander Vezenkov in the squad, and even with the presence of two of Latvia’s leaders, Khimki players Janis Tima and Dairis Bertans, the tricolor showed great fighting spirit and they deprived the Baltic national team of participation in the Old Continent championship for the first time in 22 years.
Bulgaria claimed the third installment for EuroBasket 2022 in Group H, thus joining teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece, which also secured a place in the championship.
On Monday, Bulgaria will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last match of the qualifying round, and Latvia will face Greece, but these matches will be irrelevant for qualifying.
THE OWNERS OF BOTH TEAMS:
LATVIA: Christers Zorix – Richards Lomage – Marex Meyeris – Janis Tima – Martins Myers
BULGARIA: Dee Bost – Chavdar Kostov – Hristo Zahariev – Dimitar Dimitrov – Andrey Ivanov
