The Greeks went to the beaches and parks yesterday at a time when the country has an unusual heat wave for the winter. The good weather allowed the Greeks to forget about some of the coronavirus restrictions, BNR reported, citing Reuters.
In Athens, where temperatures of 23 degrees Celsius were forecast, people went to the beach, some even swimming in the sea. Others strolled the promenade while the police patrolled and controlled the crowd. In the past 50 years, these high temperatures in January have occurred only twice, in 1987 and 2010, according to the National Observatory of Athens.
However, some residents of the capital assure that this is not normal and that last year it was cold at the same time. However, according to others, good weather is good because people cannot stay closed forever and want to go out. Greece has been partially isolated since early November due to the coronavirus. People must wear masks in public places. On Friday, the restrictions were extended, including a ban on public gatherings until at least January 18.
Average January temperatures in Greece usually range between 0 and 5 or 10 degrees Celsius, recalls the National Weather Service. But now a warm front from Africa has turned things around, and even yesterday Athens measured 31 degrees Celsius in a hot spot. The warm front is expected to recede in the coming days. Due to the warm climate in Greece, in other parts of Europe there has been an unusual cold for decades, for example in Spain, where snow paralyzes the country.
