Tax officials from the National Revenue Agency (NRA) and the Economic Police entered Hypoland’s office two days after the toy store chain’s executive director posted a critical position on social media in which he “thanked” the police that her son was gassed with chemicals in an anti-government protest in central Sofia on September 2.
The large-scale action of the security forces in the office of “Hipoland” in “Kazichene” and in the stores in Sofia was confirmed by the spokesperson of the National Revenue Agency Rosen Bachvarov to “Dnevnik”. However, he rejected any additional information: what is the reason for the inspection, what other institutions are involved in it and what is being inspected.
On Thursday, the day before the large-scale inspection, the ARC agency, known for its strong pro-government stance, published a post titled “Hypoland: A Child Wizard or a Protest Machine.” In it, the media owner Nedyalko Nedyalkov personally attacked the stores, Kolev and went to the protests, in typical agency style. The publication is a comment and does not seem to be an occasion for the self-denial of the authorities.
On September 2, the owner of the chain of stores, Marian Kolev, announced in a post that his son was among the victims of gassing during the protest and had almost lost his sight.

The action comes days after the reaction of the chief executive of the network Marian Kolev against the actions of the police during the protest on September 2.

He is the founder and majority owner of the Hypoland chain. According to Capital, he has been working in the segment since the late 1990s, when he founded Felix Toys, which is the largest toy distributor on the market in Bulgaria. Hypoland chain was established in 2005 and has 30 stores in major cities of Bulgaria and online sales. In 2018, Hipoland AD’s revenue was BGN 65 million and profit was BGN 3.6 million.
At the end of June, the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) filed a complaint and initiated two separate procedures to establish whether there was misleading advertising by toy retailers Comsed AD and Hipoland AD. In both cases, the reason for the checks was consumer signals, he wrote in his publication “Capital.” In both cases, the antitrust authority considered that the evidence provided by the companies in the preliminary inquiries was not sufficient to make a final decision on whether unfair business practices existed.
