Syria has said that its air defense system has rejected an Israeli air strike, AFP reported. The target was a research center in the northern Aleppo province, state news agency SANA reported. He later clarified, citing a Syrian military source, that Israeli rockets fired at various arms depots southeast of Aleppo had been intercepted.

The Israeli army declined to comment.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported powerful explosions in the area of the attack. According to the UK-based NGO Monitoring Organization, the attack was aimed at arms depots of the pro-Iranian militia.

Since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in the neighboring country against the forces of President Bashar al-Assad, but also against its allies Iran and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah, which are Israeli enemies. Israel has rarely commented on its operations in Syria, but has regularly emphasized that it will not allow the neighboring country to become a springboard for Iran, AFP reports.
