Criticisms of our country and the European Parliament. In the debate on the main topic “Bulgaria”, deputies from different countries and parties reported a deterioration of the situation with the rule of law in our country. It was not announced if and when the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism will be abolished for our country.
On September 23, both Bulgaria and the other 26 member states will receive their follow-up reports. This became clear after the hearing of the Vice President of the European Commission, Vera Yourova.
However, much more is being said about the situation in Bulgaria this Thursday than about that of the neighbors. The tone was surprisingly sharp at times, there were even allegations that the commission itself depended on the Bulgarian authorities.
MEPs from different political families reported problems in Bulgaria.
“Bulgaria ranks 111th on the media freedom index.” How can you be 111th and at the same time fight corruption effectively? “Asked Renew Europe’s Sophie Int Weld.
“The situation is worrying. There is deep-seated corruption. The position of the chief prosecutor is not independent at all, but is under the control of the government,” said Tineke Strick of the Greens.
“Some people must be watching today’s meeting. Geshev, who was invited last year. They must openly laugh at these EU procedures. Especially because they know the reality,” said Claire Dali, of the European United Left.
“While it is important to acknowledge the work done so far, it is equally important not to give the impression that everything is perfect,” said Roberta Mezzola of the EPP.
The Vice President of the European Commission Vera Yourova reported positive results for our country. Therefore, she accused herself of incompetence or dependence on the Bulgarian authorities. And this is how she answered them:
“The European Commission is not a member of the Constitutional Court. The commission cannot assume the role of prosecutor either. Nor can it assume the role of arbitrator in domestic politics. Member states must intervene here,” Yourova said.
The cooperation and verification mechanism had to be temporary, but there are still unfulfilled commitments. That is why there is no specific date for her abandonment, Vera Yourova said. However, our country is also part of the new rule of law control mechanism, valid for all members of the Union. The first reports are published only after 12 days.
Now it is clear that the report on our country will criticize the freedom of the media due to the political and economic pressure on journalists, said the vice president of the European Commission. He added that he continues to insist on financial pressure on member states and the commitment of European funds to the rule of law.
