This rule will apply from January 18 to 24
Vienna at this time of year usually smells of mulled wine and Christmas cookies and draws in numerous tourists, but this time it is unusually quiet.
The Austrian capital hosted a very different Christmas. One of the most festive cities in Europe was deserted, without the typical bustle. This new year is looming as Austria enters its third and strictest lockdown: restaurants, shops and hotels closed. Only groceries and basic necessities, pharmacies, gas stations, post offices and banks will work.
From January 18 to 24, Austrians will only be able to visit stores after a negative coronavirus test or wearing a high-protection mask. For this reason, the state organized a massive population test on January 16, 17 and 18. For this, special points are opened throughout the country.
The rules, which take effect on December 27, also include a ban on meeting with more than one member of another household indoors.
