The changes are being introduced due to a new strain of COVID-19 discovered in the country, which, according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is much easier to spread. As of today, anyone who tries to leave London can be arrested.
Indoor gatherings between people from different households are prohibited. Residents of the areas affected by the new measures will have to stay at home, unless they have to travel to work and only when they cannot work from home.
