I wholeheartedly support Berbatov’s entry into the Bulgarian Football Union
“The third confinement of your life has begun.” First it was the disease, then the first peak of the coronavirus. Do you see any optimism in the situation?
“You can’t say lockdown.” Perhaps life with certain restrictions, especially in its social part. But to tell the truth, I don’t think that’s the right approach. So far, there is not enough evidence that blocking is the solution.
It all came from the fact that a lot of people just didn’t realize that there were changes to get used to. After this pandemic, we cannot continue as before. And that only you and only you should be careful. There is no one else to protect you.
When they isolated me for the disease, they also treated me
thousands of things. But only my family and I had to deal with it. For which I will be grateful all my life. Because they put in a lot of work.
The problem with the coronavirus is that doctors and scientists do not know what they are fighting against. It has not been studied in detail. For all other diseases, it is known what steps need to be taken. Diagnosis is made and treatment begins. Now the situation is completely different. The information is sometimes very different. And that confuses people. But I hope that a way out of the situation will soon be found.
– How did the idea of making the Player 4 Player platform come about, or as you call it P4P, and did it bring together quite famous names like Guy Mendieta, Michael Johnson and others?
– As professional footballers, we dedicate a large part of our lives to achieving professional success. This is our focus. Success in the field. And all of this is happening in the best years of our lives. When you are young and you think that the sea is up to your knees.
We often don’t think long-term about what we’ll do in the future once we’re done, and how the decisions we make as players can affect us later in life.
From my own experience and perspective, if I had someone or an organization I could turn to, someone I could trust, and who received unbiased advice about my game and my future career, I probably wouldn’t make some decisions. My transition would be much easier. So we decided to form P4P.
We believe that we can offer a very valuable type of service to help players at all stages of their careers.
In fact, we have only been in the field for a small part of our lives. Then some lose their way. This is exactly our main objective. Having someone to turn to and when you’re on the field, to find out what you want to do after finishing football.
I am very happy to have found like-minded people with whom to make this idea a reality. And judging by the reaction of colleagues, we may be on the right track.
– Is there any interest from Bulgaria?
– Yes. And serious. Even after the launch of the platform, many inquiries were received. I have some ideas related to Bulgarian football, but it is still too early to talk about them. That moment will also come.
– Do you watch Bulgarian matches?
– If you ask me this question again, this will be my last interview with you (followed by a long pause, ba). Let’s be more serious.
I watch most of the games when I have time. Remember that “Montana” is back in the elite and I continue with greater interest. I can only miss your game with a very serious commitment. But then I register it again. Do not forget where it came from.
– The national team is sinking more and more. What are the reasons and is there a way out of this situation?
– The performance of the national team shows that it is not working properly at all levels of our football. Starting with the children and ending with the Bulgarian Football Union. There is always a way out, but you need change, work and professionalism. There is a lack of a clear and effective structure throughout the system. The image of football in Bulgaria is deteriorating at a very fast rate. Many countries have used the Nations League tournament to face young players who will be needed for the national team in the next qualifying rounds. For unknown reasons, this did not happen to our selection. Even with negative events, there might be some basis for the future. You can see from the results of young people and adolescents that there are talents. Some guys even made transfers. But they are not in the national team. This will further delay its possible increase.
There are also no views to the outside. In the different schools of the strong championships there are boys who were born in Bulgaria or have Bulgarian roots. They must be found, invited to play for Bulgaria. After all, they have the schoolgirl among the best. But clearly there is no interest in them. Many Bulgarians already live abroad. We have children. Many of them love and train soccer. But someone has to find and invite them.
– Everyone is waiting for the BFU Congress whenever it takes place. Dimitar Berbatov is rumored to join one of the candidate teams. Would you support him in that step?
– With both hands, Mr. Banov. I have always said and continue to say that Dimitar Berbatov should occupy a leadership position in the Bulgarian Football Union. A man with vision, intellect, perseverance and pragmatism!
I, like many other former soccer players and now fans, stand for positive change with the right people who can change the direction and development of Bulgarian soccer for a better future.
And he’s one of those iconic, independent personalities.
It made a very good impression on me that he is in a team with Petar Velichkov. A successful businessman who has already gained a lot of experience in football management as a member of the executive committee. This gives me very serious hope that things will change and we will go uphill.
The mere fact that more than a year after the resignation of Borislav Mihailov no congress can be held shows that there is a functional problem in the BFU. Yes, there are objective reasons for this, but the situation was not the same from October of last year to March. There was enough time.
The whole world has learned to work online. In this way numerous congresses and general meetings were held. I completed my Pro license course completely online due to the pandemic. In Bulgaria, however
everything had to be present, which I don’t understand. Or the reason is that there are simply not enough young people with computer skills in Bulgarian football. That needs to change.
And Berbatov knows that he can always come to me for advice and support. In the name of the good of Bulgarian football.
