The Macedonian Foreign Ministry sent a protest note to Sofia over a video from IMRO MEP Angel Djambazki addressing “temporary rulers of our Macedonia” and speaks of its end.
This is yet another provocation by the Bulgarian IMRO, which continues to exploit the issue in its election campaign, after Prime Minister Boyko Borissov delegated it to it in an attempt to secure a government partner in the next parliament.

In response, Skopje said it would respond to the institutions of the European Union.

IFIMES analysis claims that Bulgarian authorities provide inaccurate data that Macedonians are of Bulgarian origin and insist that North Macedonia must issue an official statement that the Macedonian language and identity have Bulgarian roots.
Connected vessels
Such provocations have led to a response in North Macedonia, usually from the VMRO-DPMNE opposition. The two IMROs act as connected vessels in similar situations. Previously, in North Macedonia, there were cases of the burning of Bulgarian national flags.
Relations between the two countries have been strained after Bulgaria failed to support North Macedonia’s negotiating framework over Skopje’s refusal to sign a new document to replace the sterile 2017 neighborhood agreement.
Sofia also failed diplomatically, failing to persuade other member states to set her requirements in the framework.
Now Sofia and Skopje are practically not negotiating, and the Bulgarian IMRO has made the issue an important part of their election campaign. The Zoran Zaev government also hardened its tone, and the opposition to VMRO – DPMNE reacted hysterically to the mention of concessions to Bulgaria.
In this context, Serbia is gaining more and more influence in the region.
