Automotive repair shops in Bulgaria report a serious increase in catalyst theft. Catalytic converter, as it is more correctly called, it is a device added to the car’s exhaust system to convert some of the more toxic substances released by the engine into more harmless components.

A catalyst, even a second-hand one, costs several hundred levs. This is the challenge for thieves, who have gone from car theft to catalyst theft, explained Eng. Georgi Iliev, vice president of the Bulgarian Autogas Services Association at BNT’s morning block.

“The catalysts contain trace amounts of precious metals: platinum, gold, but with good recycling technology they manage to obtain it. The second-hand catalysts are exported outside of Bulgaria, where there are recycling plants,” Iliev added.
