Chaos and scandals during voting in Turkey, queues in front of sections in Western Europe
Election day for Bulgarians in Turkey began with scandals in a section of the Avcilar district of Istanbul. The reason is the statements that voters had to fill out online, but the commission for the morning section decided that people who did not fill out the statement should do so live, but outside the section. At a later meeting of the commission on election day, the opposite was decided: statements must be completed within the section, BNR reports. This led to organizational chaos, queues, crowds, and an inability to follow up on anti-epidemic measures from a distance.
The resulting chaos raised doubts among Bulgarians in the section that an attempt was being made to prevent them from voting. “Sega” reports that while in the Avcilar district yesterday there were minibuses with loudspeakers all day announcing how the vote for the Bulgarian parliament will take place, in another district of Istanbul, Gaziosmanpasha, where there is a section, there were no indications that today there will be elections.
Turkey is traditionally the country with the most Bulgarians who voted from abroad. This year it is also the country with the most requests for voting, with 21,000, and this year there are 35 sections in the country due to restrictions on the number of sections in non-EU countries.
