A Bulgarian and a Pakistani have been trying to settle their lives in Balchik for years, but the man never has a visa. Otherwise, they have a child and a marriage. Now they hope that the tightening of the measures against COVID-19 will give them the freedom to be together and legally.
The love between Gergana and Akil broke out in 2013 in Norway. Shortly after they left for Pakistan, where they said their coveted “yes.” Already pregnant, Gergana’s visa expires and she has to return to Bulgaria, but without Akil. “During this time the child was born and we did not know what to do. There was no one to help me, I couldn’t even work, ”shared Gergana.
According to our Foreign Ministry, Akil applied for a short-term visa twice in 2015. One of the refusals claims that the Pakistani has already resided illegally in Norway. Therefore, you could use the entry into Bulgaria as a transit to a third country. Achilles bets his life. From Pakistan it goes to Bulgaria via Iran, Turkey and Greece. Travel thousands of miles illegally. “It was very difficult for me, but I was determined to see my son. The lives of my wife and my son were more important than anything else. It was difficult and dangerous: I didn’t have a phone, I didn’t have enough water and food, “Akil told NOVA’s camera.
“When he arrived in Turkey, he managed to contact me, he told me that he was there and that he would soon go to Greece. However, he was arrested there, “said Gergana. After passing through the refugee camp in Greece, Akil received a pass and arrived in Balchik. For the first time, he does not see in a photo, but his son, Favad, lives alone when the child is almost two years old.
However, nothing has been done with the visa. And the family lives in fear of the immigration authorities. “I don’t like to knock on the door and ask the child if someone is coming for his father,” said the woman.
Gergana and Akil claim their rights before the Bulgarian court. The Dobrich magistrates respect the fact that they are a family. However, the judges of the Supreme Court of Sofia reversed the decision of the court in Dobrich. Still, the visa procedure is one. “The issuance of a visa must be before the foreigner enters the country. His presence is a prerequisite for a person from a third country to enter Bulgaria. The person must be outside the territory of our country and submit an application to our consulate of a neighboring country, from which the visa will be issued ”, explained Krassimira Ivanova, President of the Administrative Court – Dobrich.
Even if Akil is still applying, the family still doesn’t meet the conditions. Gergana takes care of the maintenance while she is at home with the child. His legal adviser, Petya Kazakova, is counting on the global pandemic to allow Akil to remain in Bulgaria for extraordinary reasons. Otherwise, there are no guarantees under standard procedure. “If you go abroad, either to Pakistan or choose to apply to another Bulgarian diplomatic mission, no one guarantees that you will get a visa. We can appeal that decision, but it will take a long time,” Petya Kazakova said.
And all this wandering to show husband and wife that sometimes love is above the law.
