A man from Tsarevo is celebrating his 107th birthday today. Every Saint Nicholas day, Grandpa Todor wishes only health. The centenary holds unique memories of two wars, a monarchy and several serious epidemics that passed through Bulgaria.
On the threshold of the year 108, Grandfather Todor is in complete isolation due to the pandemic and the fear of his relatives, who want to keep him healthy. Todor Karagogov was born on December 6, 1913 in Bunar Hisar, present-day Turkey, into a family of refugees. He tells us that he listens a lot, but is healthy.
“I can’t hear and I can’t look. Otherwise I’m fine,” he said.

Grandfather Todor survived the Spanish flu epidemic, he remembers stories from his ancestors about the deadly diseases that Bulgaria did not pass: plague, cholera and smallpox. Learn about the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many years ago when I was young, I had pneumonia. I was in the hospital for 32 days. I don’t remember what year it was, “he said.
Todor Karagochev, 107, is a longtime widower. He tells us that he lived modestly and happily, had five children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “So far he’s doing well, taking care of himself, which is commendable for his age,” Alexander Karagogov said.
Grandpa Todor says that long ago he lost his companions and his beloved. He thinks he is ordered with longevity, but he does not deny that old age is difficult.
A 102-year-old woman parachuted to Australia
Although he lived by the sea for 102 years, Grandfather Todor was not a fisherman. He was only a sheep farmer and loves Strandzha. However, he remembers with a smile the year 1929, when the sea froze without being seen. His recipe for longevity is simple.
“Cigarettes – no! If you have cigarettes, I don’t love you. I sip brandy. But I don’t get drunk! I drink brandy as a recipe!”
Although he has lost his strength over the years, the old man believes that he is destined to live. And the firewood arranged for the stove, which he ordered in front of the door, says that it will stay for the next winter.
