In mid-2021, 15 new locomotives will enter the rail system, which will serve the main and busiest routes in the country. This was said by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rosen Zhelyazkov during the inauguration of the commissioning of two new Siemens Smartron locomotives and the presentation of the new heavy machinery for the maintenance and repair of the railway at the train station from Poduyane, the ministry said.
The event was attended by the mayor of the municipality of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, the mayor of Poduyane Eva Mitova, representatives of the Management Authority of OP “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” 2014-2020, the Director General of Railway Infrastructure Krassimir Papukchiiski, the Executive Director of Sustaining BDZ EAD Nikola Vassilev and others.
“Today we mark three events that are inextricably linked under the slogan ‘railway renovation’. Here we see the results of a long reform process that goes through paying the huge debts of BDZ and continues with colossal investments in the railways over the next few years.” said Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, quoted by the MTITC press center, BTA reported.
“BDZ has signed an additional agreement with the contractor for 5 more locomotives, to be delivered in June 2021,” said the Transport Minister. He added that these are the first new locomotives bought since 1986. “Next year’s budget foresees an increase of BGN 200 million for capital transfers and subsidies, of which nearly BGN 115 million are for rolling stock,” said Rosen Zhelyazkov. .
According to him, for the first time the state will have the opportunity to apply for European financing for the purchase of traction units. “In the framework of the Sustainability and Recovery Mechanism, more than BGN 750 million are foreseen for railway infrastructure and BGN 250 million for new trains,” the minister explained.
Regarding the renovated reception building at the Poduyane train station, the Minister noted that the project is an excellent example of effective spatial management and revitalization of urban areas, for the benefit of railway residents and passengers. “In 2019 alone, 147,000 passengers passed through the Poduyane train station,” Zhelyazkov said.
At today’s event, two new high-tech tractors, owned by NRIC, were unveiled that will ensure faster and more efficient maintenance of the railroad in the country, according to the announcement.
