Renault Megane retired for electric vehicles?

The Megane has always been one of the most successful Renault models. The car debuted in late 1995 and is available in various body styles to meet the needs of buyers. Today, the Megane is competing in the highly disputed compact car segment, but for Renault, the numbers don’t look very good. One of the automotive group’s top bosses told Auto Express UK that the iconic model could be in jeopardy, as its sales are steadily declining from the 465,732 units sold in Europe in 2010. Is it possible to say goodbye to the cool-looking car? and recently renovated, as well as its powerful RS modification?

According to Lawrence van den Acker, Renault’s chief designer, the French company is considering redirecting funds for Megane’s development to more fruitful efforts. This is the automotive company’s new focus on electric vehicles. In this sense, Megane’s low sales do not help him at all. In 2019, only 209,845 models were purchased in Europe, a decrease of more than 50% in 10 years. Even more surprising, in the UK, Megane’s sales last year were only 2,699, with VW selling almost 60,000 Golfs in comparison.

“It is inevitable that once we start adding a number of electric vehicles to our product line, some of the other vehicles will have to go down because we simply cannot afford to develop everything at the same time.” Megane is competing in a segment that is under increasing pressure. We need to invest where the future is in the market, ”explained Lawrence Acker.
