A shipment of more than 23 tons of cocaine was seized in Germany and Belgium, a record for Europe, world agencies reported, citing the German customs service and the Dutch prosecution.

16 tons and 170 kilograms of this type of drug were found on February 12 in the port of Hamburg in five containers originating in Paraguay, BTA reported.

Then another 7.3 tons of cocaine were found, stored in the port of Antwerp in containers arriving from Panama.

The seized amount of the drug could be sold on the street for around 600 million euros, according to Dutch prosecutors. The German customs service, for its part, has estimated its value at several billion euros.

A 28-year-old man suspected of importing cocaine has been arrested in the Netherlands.

Yesterday, the Dutch customs authorities announced a record shipment of heroin seized in the country: more than a ton and a half in the port of Rotterdam. The market value of the drug is about 45 million euros.
