Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a package of laws that allow the constitution of the Russian Federation to have supremacy over international treaties and the decisions of intergovernmental bodies in cases where they conflict with the basic law of Russia, they reported Reuters and TASS.
The Kremlin has said that all Russian obligations under international treaties remain in force and Moscow remains fully committed to international law. The amendments concern the Civil, Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure and Administrative Code, as well as 115 Russian laws.
However, the new laws have caused concern among some human rights activists in Russia. Hundreds of Russians go to the European Court of Human Rights each year seeking justice, which they say has been denied to them at home.
The changes are part of a series of legal and constitutional amendments approved this year. They include one that allows Putin to run for president two more times after his current term ends in 2024.
