“The fact that one day we will have significantly more cases of new COVID-19 infections does not mean that there is a lasting trend. We need to identify more days with higher levels of infection before taking any action.”
Thus, pulmonologist Dr. Alexander Simidchiev commented on the alarming number of people infected with coronavirus in the country during the last 24 hours in the program “Face to Face” – 436 people.
He suggested that the restrictive measures currently being considered are likely related to restricting sporting events and visiting nightclubs, rather than employment or movement of people on the streets.
“The number of infected people is growing, but the number of hospitalized patients is not growing at the same rate. In my opinion, this is due to the fact that the epidemic is spreading more among young and healthy people in relation to the opening of schools, “said Dr. Alexander Simidchiev.
He said it was more important to observe physical distance measurements, as well as properly wear protective masks, than to close restaurants.
According to the pulmonologist, to stop the infection process, the connection between people and the ability to spread the virus through the air must be cut.
He also explained that if we overstimulate the immune system, coronavirus disease can get worse.
“For now, I would refrain from recommending immunostimulants for the prevention of COVID-19,” said Dr. Simidchiev.
“There are already two vaccines that are effective, but the problem is their safety. I don’t think that by the end of this year there will be a vaccine that has been shown to be effective and safe, because the safety test is a bit longer and more complicated. I suspect that will happen next year ”, he predicted.
However, Dr. Simidchiev clarified that the efficacy criteria for these vaccines are around 50 to 60%, that is, they do not guarantee 100% freedom from disease.
“It is not clear how long the immunity will last. This will be a flu-like vaccine that must be given annually,” he added.
