Radan Kanev MEP (Democratic Bulgaria / EPP) has accused prosecutors of harassing pro-Western politicians in the country. He pointed out to BTV the aggressive rhetoric of Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev and how to declare people criminals, who were later acquitted by the court.
Kanev listed the names of former ministers Nikolay Nenchev, Daniel Mitov, Petar Moskov, Traicho Traikov and Simeon Djankov, against whom, according to him, the court declared there was no evidence. “All these people were declared criminals by the Bulgarian prosecution, after which the court said that in their indictment the prosecution did not even describe a crime. This is institutional harassment,” Kanev said.
He added that right now the conversation about convening a Grand National Assembly is absurd. According to him, the most important thing is to quickly initiate the change in the judicial system and the reform of the prosecution service. He also expressed outrage at Bulgarian National Television, which yesterday published false news that protesters were organizing a People’s Court. The initiators of discontent with the Poison Trio denied that such an initiative was being prepared. An apology from BNT followed.
“Bulgarian citizens cannot be surrounded by a media environment in which national television produces fake news,” Kanev added, asking if public television was free.
He called for an open debate in the European Parliament on what is happening in Bulgaria. According to him, it would be reasonable for the PPE, of which GERB is a part, to support this debate. Radan Kanev also said that he had a conversation with former President of the European Council and current President of the European People’s Party, Donald Tusk.
