On October 3, the professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Sofia, Prof. Dr. Alexander Stoynov, died suddenly, announced the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Ivanov Stoynov was a prominent lawyer, scientist and professor of criminal law. He was born in Sofia in 1949. He graduated in law at the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1974. Since 1977 he has been teaching at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”, successively holding the positions Academic Assistant (1977), Principal Assistant (1982), Principal Assistant (1986), Associate Professor (1994) and Professor of Criminal Law (2004). He holds a doctorate in law from the University of Sofia (1989). He is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law (1995-1999) and Head of the Department of Criminal Law (1994-1996 and 2000-2008). He has specialized in Paris, at the Institute for Comparative Law Studies, as well as at the Law Faculties of the Sorbonne and the University of Montpellier, France.

The name of Prof. Dr. Alexander Stoynov has become a symbol of principles and high standards for legal education. His indisputable qualities as a scientist are the reason why he was invited as a lecturer at other universities in Bulgaria and abroad. Prof. Dr. Stoynov has lectured at law schools in France and Serbia. He is the author of numerous monographs, textbooks, lecture courses, articles, and studies in Bulgarian, Russian, French, and German. Invariably he has been invited to participate in working groups established by various governments to draft a new Penal Code since 1993. He was a member of the Commission for Pardons of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, of the Advisory Council on Legislation of the National Assembly of the Republic from Bulgaria and others.

His contribution to the authority of the University of Sofia, the Faculty of Law and the Department of Criminal Law is enormous. In 2014 he was awarded the highest award – the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” badge of honor with a necklace.
