Adjunct Professor Alexander Oscar was awarded by the BMA with the award “Doctor of the year 2020”Y Prof. Ventsislav Mutafchiiski highest recognition for the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
On October 19, the day of the Bulgarian celestial patron Saint Ivan Rilski, is celebrated and bulgarian doctor’s day. In honor of the holiday, the Bulgarian Medical Union presents the prestigious “Doctor of the Year” awards annually.
This year the BMA created a special category for contributing to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, in which he honored deserving physicians and medical institutions. Nominations were sent to him from around the country.
The winners are headed by Dr. Ventsislav Mutafchiiski, Prof. Major General. Followed by Associate Prof. Dr. Angel Kunchev, Prof. Dr. Todor Kantardzhiev, Dr. Alexander Simidchiev, Dr. Doncho Donchev, Dr. Sibila Marinova, Deputy Prof. Dr. Diana Radkova, Prof. Dr. Radka Argirova, Colonel Prof. Dr. Georgi Popov, Assistant Prof. Dr. Stefan Uzunov, Dr. Maria Pishmisheva, Academy of Military Medicine, “Alexandrovska” University Hospital, “NI Pirogov” University Hospital, Hospital – Haskovo.
At the beginning of the ceremony, everyone present bowed their heads. a minute of silence in memory of the doctors, who failed in the fight against the insidious disease, but fulfilled his professional and moral duty to the end. They received posthumous awards.
The title “Doctor of the year 2020” obtain Ophthalmologist Prof. Asoc. Alexander Oscar, Head of the Ocular Disease Clinic of the University Hospital “Alexandrovska”, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at MU-Sofia. He is one of the few specialists in Bulgaria dealing with retinopathy in premature babies and the application of laser therapy to treat complications.
Adjunct Professor Alexander Oscar thanked the award and recalled that professional organization is the basis for the rescue of Bulgarian Jews, including their grandparents. Dr. Oscar said that the reward for him is a responsibility as a physician so that he does not forget his obligations to patients, as well as his responsibility to society.
This year’s winner of the Doctor of the Year award is the president of the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” and the secretary of the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology.
It is the basis of the Do Good initiative, within which in the last 7 years there have been screened over 30,000 children for freeand more than 1,000 glasses were donated to needy patients. Over the past two years, it has also organized free checkups for more than 3,000 adult patients, many of whom are admitted to social care homes.
Associate Professor Oscar is also the basis for the joint initiative “Together we will manage” between BMA and the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology. Associate Professor Oscar is personally involved in logistics and organization, in recruiting volunteers, and thanks to his effort and great desire, assisted nearly 500 families of doctors and their relatives in quarantine of all country.
TO category “Contribution to the development and application of innovative medicine and unique techniques” The awards were presented to Prof. Dr. Ivo Petrov, Dr. Ivan Valkanov and Prof. Dr. Valeria Hadjiyska.
The BMA Secretary General, Dr. Stoyan Borisov, presented the awards to “Long-term activity in the field of medicine and active contribution to the development of the specialty. ”Prof. Dr. Ognyan Hadjiiski, Prof. Dr. Lyubomir Kirov, Prof. Dr. Chavdar Stefanov, Prof. Dr. Atanas Shterev were awarded.
In the category “Contribution to the development and establishment of the authority of the professional organization” the awards were presented to Dr. Petko Zagorchev and Prof. Dr. Boris Bogov.
In the category “You are our future” The awards were presented by the Vice President of the BMA, Prof. Nikolay Gabrovski. Dr. Dimitar Tsachev and Dr. Stanislav Kotsev received awards for their young medical hopes in Bulgaria.
The 2020 Doctor of the Year ceremony was inaugurated by the president of the BMA Dr. Ivan Madjarov. According to him, in this tense year, everyone needs at least a little distance from the enormous burden they are subjected to from the daily battle with the insidious disease.

Official guests of the event include Associate Professor Diana Kovacheva – Bulgarian Ombudsman and Svetlana Yordanova – Deputy Minister of Health. The ceremony was also attended by representatives of municipal, private, regional and university hospital associations, the academic community, dentists, pharmacists, patient organizations, the Bulgarian Red Cross, as well as many other partners and friends of the Medical Union.
