“Three of the complex and significant dams in the country have a problem with water reserves. In another 15 water facilities we have no problems with filling, but with the retention of the resource so that it does not overflow,” said the Minister of the Environment. Environment and Water, Emil Dimitrov, in a parliamentary question. parliamentary control over the reduction of the flooded volumes available at significant dams.

Critically Low River Levels Across the Country

In six of the 52 dams, the available water volumes are between 76 and 98 percent. The “Borovitsa”, “Studena”, “Dyakovo”, “Kalin” and “Karagyol” dams can hardly prevent them from overflowing, we have a problem of how to balance them so that they don’t get too full, because then we have to pour the water “, added the minister.

Emil Dimitrov: There is no danger of water shortage in the Varna region, this is not the case in Burgas

The three dams that are problematic due to the low level of water reserves are Yastrebino, Ticha and Kamchia. Yastrebino was established as an agricultural dam, but 15 years ago a city was “attached” to it, which uses 20,000 cubic meters per month, ”said the minister, noting that if it is used only for drinking and for household needs, the stocks in it they will reach 50 years. The minister added that the problem in the region is rather that the necessary quantities are not delivered to farmers.

Emil Dimitrov: Burgas is threatened by the water regime

“Ticha has water reserves for 20 months, but we limit it because it is also agricultural and we have to give it to farmers,” Dimitrov said. According to him, although the dam is only a reservoir for Shumen, the city uses it as its main source of water. According to the minister, the local water supply and sewerage system should restore the wells to relieve the dam a bit. Dimitrov said that they had given 120 million BGN under OPE to repair the supply pipeline and the treatment plant. This will reduce losses and the available volumes will be reached in at least 24 months.

Emil Dimitrov: The situation with Pernik can be repeated on the Black Sea coast

“The most problematic situation is with the Kamchia dam due to the drought, which has been going on for four years,” the minister said, noting that restrictions have been imposed since the beginning of the year. The water it contains will arrive in eight to 10 months. Several options are being discussed to solve the problem, the Council of Ministers has already decided to add two dams to the diversion, which supplies Burgas, so that they can sustain the city’s drinking and domestic water supply.
