While the authorities in the Kremlin are trying to bring Russia as a humanitarian savior to other countries, the truth is difficult to hide now: medical workers in Russia do not have protective clothing.
Poorly equipped, doctors are afraid to treat their patients because they may be infected with a coronavirus. It is not even about the sparsely populated areas of the Russian Federation, but about its epicenter: the capital. In a hospital in Mytishchi, near Moscow, ill-equipped doctors work, reports AFP.
“They give us a unique mask a day and they have to be replaced every two hours.” We have to buy them ourselves, like gloves, or sew ourselves. And we’ve never seen protective suits, ”said an agency interviewer, who introduced herself as Olga, a doctor at one of the city’s polyclinics.
Under these conditions, overloaded doctors become carriers of the new coronavirus, the woman points out, and ensures that her guidance is up-to-date but inactive. There are also many complaints from doctors whose leadership has refused to evaluate staff at health centers. The situation in Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, is no less optimistic. “There is a risk of repeating the Italian scenario. The Russian medical community expects the worst,” says one rescuer who declined to reveal his name.
Medicine in Russia, as in other parts of the world, had to be urgently mobilized to combat the epidemic. However, the crisis hit a weakened health system after decades of underfunding and controversial reforms. So far, a complete picture of resource and resource scarcity has not been presented to the public. Putin has promised all specialists to obtain equipment that provides quality and efficient protection. The Russian health ministry says that by the end of April it had already equipped two-thirds of the 95,000 hospital beds provided for patients with COVID-19. However, the truth is increasingly difficult to hide.
