The average life expectancy of the population of Bulgaria, calculated for the period 2017-2019, is 74.9 years. Compared to the previous period 2016-2018, the indicator increased by 0.1 years. This is demonstrated by the data from the 2019 Report on the implementation of the Updated National Strategy for the Demographic Development of the Population in the Republic of Bulgaria (2012-2030), which was adopted by the government. This was announced by the Government Information Service.

The most positive demographic trend is the significant reduction in infant mortality in recent years. In 2019, 342 children under one year of age died in the country and the infant mortality rate was 5.6%. This is the lowest value recorded in the country. In 2001, the infant mortality rate was 14.4%, in 2005 it was 10.4% and in 2018 it was 5.8%.

Regarding the standard and quality of life of the population, positive changes are observed. In 2019, the average annual income per household member averaged BGN 6,592 and increased by 9.6% compared to 2018. During the last ten years (2010 – 2019), the total income per household member has increased 1.8 times. Real household income increased 6.3% in 2019 compared to 2018.

In 2019, 61,538 live births were registered in the country. Compared to the previous year, the number of live births decreased by 659 children, or 1.06%. The average age of women at the time of the birth of their first child increases from 27.2 years in 2018 to 27.3 years in 2019.
The total fertility rate for another year remains at levels around 1.5. In 2019, the average number of live births per woman was 1.58, which represents an increase of 0.02 compared to 2018. For comparison, in 2001 it was 1.24 and in 2016 it was 1.54 .

According to NSI data as of December 31, 2019, the population of Bulgaria is 6,951,482 people, which represents 1.4% of the population of the European Union. Compared to 2018, the country’s population decreased by 48,557 people, or 0.7%.
