Three people were injured after police tried to stop an illegal service at a temple in Halkidiki. Tensions between law enforcement, the son of a priest and two believers went to extremes, leading to fines and arrests, Nova TV reported.
The incident took place at a church in Riza, a village in Halkidiki, in northern Greece, when some neighbors reported to the police that the church had opened its doors to believers despite the coronavirus ban. At the arrival of the police, in addition to the priest and members of the service, two parishioners were present in violation of the restrictive measures.
The police drew up minutes for a fine of 300 euros for the believers and a fine of 1,500 euros for the priest. In response, the priest’s son and a believer physically assaulted the two policemen, causing minor injuries. Police were hospitalized in a Polygyros hospital.
One of the attackers has been arrested and will face the Halkidiki prosecutor on Monday. According to the restrictions, priests have the right to conduct religious services only in the presence of the necessary attendants and the church choir. The doors of the temples are closed to the parishioners.
