Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called the compromise on the rule of law reached by the leaders of the European Union a double victory, DPA reported.

The bloc’s budget and recovery plan were adopted in July, but were blocked by Hungary and Poland. The compromise reached last night by the leaders of the 27 member states of the EU allows to unblock the situation related to the next European budget and the recovery plan from the coronavirus crisis.

“On the one hand, the budget of the European Union can be executed and Poland will receive 174 million euros from it. On the other hand, these funds are safe, since the conditionality mechanism has been limited to very specific criteria.” Moravetsky commented.

According to him, the agreement also avoids the danger that the rules will be changed later to the detriment of Polish interests.

A similar position was expressed by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.

“We have won. In a difficult period of pandemic, economic crisis, there is no time to continue the political and ideological debates that prevent us from acting,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs commented on Twitter.
