Pfizer and Biontech warned tonight that the effectiveness of their COVID-19 vaccine is not guaranteed if the second dose is not received on the 21st day after the first. The two companies have no clinical evidence that the body remains protected from the coronavirus after that, BNR reports.
The vaccine has only been shown to be effective if the second dose is received within 42 days of the first.
On this occasion, the European Medicines Agency announced tonight that the authorized deadlines between doses must be met. Otherwise, the use of the Pfizer and Biontech vaccine would violate the issued permit.
The statements come after the Danish government officially approved the period between the two doses to be up to 6 weeks. The German government is discussing a similar proposal, according to Reuters. The reason is the shortage of vaccines due to the production capacity of Pfizer and Biontech, whose only product so far has been approved by the European Union.
