A Bulgarian stole 8 new cars from the Volkswagen factory. The price of the cars is estimated at 345,000 euros.
Martin Petrov loaded the new cars onto a tractor under the nose of the plant employees and set off for Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, he obtained false documents, with which he managed to legalize the cars at the Sofia Traffic Police.
This follows from the allegations against him, cited in court rulings, writes bg-voice.com.
The unprecedented robbery took place on October 9, 2018.
The 32-year-old Bulgarian loaded the cars from the parking lot to provide vehicles. The tractor he loaded them on had a Bulgarian registration number. There was also a trailer with a German number, the German judicial authorities describe the case.
They accuse Martin Petrov of dealing in illegally seized vehicles. He faces up to five years in prison in Germany for this crime. After gathering sufficient evidence, the Germans issued a European Arrest Warrant (EAW).
The documents reach the Pernik District Prosecutor’s Office, which urges the Pernik District Court to comply with the arrest warrant. The magistrates demand additional information on the evidence against the Bulgarian.
The German judicial authorities share the trump cards of the prosecution. These are camera recordings that filmed the Bulgarian, photographic material of Petrov leaving the border with the truck, as well as a reference that it is he who drives the vehicle in which the cars are loaded.
The defendant himself questions the extradition request and asks not to be extradited to Germany. Furthermore, Martin Petrov claims that he was neither in Wolfsburg nor in the region on the date in question. According to the magistrates, this is a fundamental question in the future process.
The attorney also found an interesting discrepancy. The indictment alleges that Petrov stole the cars on October 9, 2018 with a trailer with a stolen German license plate, which disappeared days later, on October 15. The judges were not impressed by the revelation and allowed Petrov’s extradition. Until his actual delivery, he is under house arrest.
