People are gradually shedding prudence and buying nonessential goods like clothes and shoes. This is shown by the INE data from the beginning of this year. According to them, the turnover in January in sales of textiles and leather products has increased significantly, by 37% compared to December.

Overall retail sales have grown, but are moving at a slower pace, by 1.8 percent compared to December last year.

After the clothing and footwear trade, there was a more significant growth in the trade of pharmaceutical and medical products, as well as cosmetics – 5.8%, as well as household appliances, furniture and other household goods – 3.8% .

In the consumption of food, beverages and tobacco, the increase is much smaller: 1%. Purchases of computers and telephones also increased slightly, by 0.7%. The growth was small, but in December there was a decrease.

In January, online shopping fell dramatically. Compared with the previous month, trade by mail, telephone or online orders decreased by 15.4%. There was an exit from this type of purchases in December, when it decreased by 11.4%.

Annual data shows that consumption still cannot recover to pre-crisis levels caused by the pandemic. Overall, the retail turnover in January was 3.9% lower than a year ago. But there is an update, since in December the annual difference was 11%.

Compared with last January, the clothing and footwear trade is the one that is lagging the most: the decrease is 27.3%. It is followed by sales of automotive fuels (-21.8%) and medical devices (-8.7%). However, there is a significant increase in purchases of furniture and household items, at 6.1 percent. This is due to working from home and the repairs carried out to make the home a more comfortable and functional space. In food and beverages, sales grew 2.7%. But the biggest annual increase is in online orders, which were up 23.5 percent.

Production in January also increased slightly compared to December, by 0.8%. This is mainly due to the growth in computer and communication equipment and electronic products (19.6%). The production of alternative vehicles to the car also has a good growth, increasing by 18.5%. The manufacturing industry increased by 2.1% and the production and distribution of electricity, heating and gas, by 1.2%. However, the yield decreased by 13.1 percent.
