A powerful new earthquake has hit Croatia. There are already seven confirmed victims, one of them is a child who died in the epicenter of the disaster.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck again between the cities of Sisak and Petrinja at 1:20 p.m. Bulgarian time. The epicenter is 47 km southeast of Zagreb, where serious damage has also occurred.
The aftershocks lasted all afternoon. The country’s president and prime minister are already in the region.
It is the first so serious in 140 years. There is no data on injured Bulgarian citizens.
There are many human stories behind the disaster. Famous Croatian singer Lana Jurcevic accidentally captured the moment of the earthquake during a live Instagram connection.
The earthquake also disrupted the mayor of Sisak’s press conference. In the town of Petrinja, the earthquake claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl. People are buried under the rubble. Screams are heard, rescuers say.
People are jumping off the roofs they are repairing after yesterday’s earthquake. The sirens of emergency teams and firefighters sound.
The city of Sisak is also in ruins. The town hall and the roof of the city hospital collapsed.
In Zagreb, 50 kilometers from the epicenter, former footballer Vanya Djaferovic compares yesterday’s earthquake with today’s.
“It was much scarier. It was much longer and longer than yesterday. For about 20 seconds the whole house shook. We took the children away immediately. We left by car, we left the house, now we return home.” There is a collapse. total in Zagreb, cars cannot pass, ambulances cannot pass, the situation is terrible, “said Dzaferovic.
The military is helping to deal with the damage. The building of the Ministry of Defense was seriously damaged, a hospital was evacuated.
“It was horrible! Pieces of the walls began to fall. Everything in the hospital was shaking. We were in the room with a woman, her son was in the systems, we took out the systems to save him. Terrifying!” Says a resident local.
Neshko Neshev from Zagreb says that people don’t dare to go home.
There are no victims among the Bulgarian community in the country, but the connection with our compatriots has been difficult due to the lack of electricity and interrupted communications. And this Wednesday a strong storm hangs in the area with rain and snow.
In Croatia, they are already organizing to help those affected. The local population offers shelter and basic needs on social media, and several companies have mobilized.
“We found that they were all healthy and alive, of course, quite shocked by the psychological shock and the search for loved ones. Cracks have been found in the embassy building, but we will inspect when the electricity is turned on, “said Bulgarian Ambassador Genka Georgieva.
Europe is ready to help, wrote EC President Ursula von der Leyen.
In Slovenia, the parliament was evacuated and legislators fled in panic. The local nuclear power plant, located 100 km from the epicenter, was also closed. There are also defeats in northeast Bosnia.
Today’s earthquake in Croatia is more than 30 times more powerful than the strongest one felt yesterday. Monday’s earthquake near Zagreb had a magnitude of 5.2 and today’s magnitude 6.4. In March, Croatia was rocked by another strong earthquake, which left dozens of people injured.
According to seismologists, it is possible that the strong earthquakes at the beginning of the year were related to today’s strong earthquake.
“It is a seismic zone. This is because it is located on the edge of the Adriatic microplate and there are fault structures, which are characterized by an earthquake of greater magnitude. It is observed the very fact that this area of Croatia is characterized by an old construction and therefore a great destruction. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict such a thing. It is not something that can be studied and estimated after how long the earthquake will occur there “, says seismologist Dragomir Dragomirov from NIGGG at BAS .
The earthquake was also felt in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, but not in Bulgaria.
Our country is ready to help Croatia after the devastating earthquake that occurred there. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ekaterina Zaharieva, in a conversation with her Croatian counterpart, Gordan Garlic-Radman.
