Macedonian President Stevo Pendarovski and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev say they are unprepared for concessions and compromises with neighboring Bulgaria that would invade Macedonia’s identity or language. After today’s Security Council meeting, dedicated to the coronavirus crisis, the two top government officials commented on the latest information coming from Brussels and Sofia, reports the Macedonian edition of Deutsche Welle.

“What I can definitely say is that there are no compromises and there will be no negotiations on the Macedonian identity and language.” “This is our understanding and, of course, there should be no negotiations about our identity,” Pendarovski said. The head of state hopes that a compromise will be reached with Bulgaria, in the same way that one was reached with Greece, without specifying what exactly he means, reports FOCUS.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva said Wednesday that a compromise is needed for Sofia to recognize reality, that is. the existence of the Macedonian language and nation, and that Skopje is invited to acknowledge the past, that is, that the roots of both the language and the nation are Bulgarian. Otherwise, Bulgaria will block the start of accession talks between North Macedonia and the EU.

Zaev says that such a proposal has not officially reached the Bulgarian government, but says it is a fact that the two countries have a common history.

“I agree with President Pendarovski that there can be no negotiations on identity and language. But mutual understanding within us leads us to what we call reality. dominant in the future, we have the opportunity to use it, “Zaev said.

The prime minister interprets the information from Brussels as good and believes that it paves the way for negotiations.

Regarding the controversy over Gotse Delchev’s ethnicity and the discussions on this issue in the Joint Historical Commission between the two countries, President Pendarovski believes that this is not the work of historians either.

“If Gotse Delchev declares himself Bulgarian in some documents, as they say on the Bulgarian side, in Macedonia we have many documents that he fought for Macedonia and wanted to be buried in Macedonia.” Here are his bones in Skopje, “Pendarovski said.
