The vaccine for the new coronavirus, developed by the German pharmaceutical company Biontech and the American company Pfizer, will be able to curb the Pavid-19 pandemic, TASS reported.
Biontech CEO and co-founder Ugur Shahin expressed confidence in this in an interview with the British Guardian newspaper, as quoted by BTA.
“When it comes to whether we can stop this pandemic with a vaccine, my answer is yes, because I believe that even protection against symptomatic infections will have a huge effect,” he said.
The scientist speculates that the drug will prevent the spread of the virus in infected people who do not have symptoms of the disease, although vaccine tests cannot officially confirm this at this stage. According to Shahin, it may take a year to clarify this issue. After about three weeks, data is expected on whether the protection of the drug is equally strong for different age groups. It is unknown at this time.
“The vaccine will not allow the virus to enter cells, and even if it succeeds, it will be attacked and destroyed by T cells. We have been able to train the immune system to perform these two protective functions very effectively. And now we know that the virus cannot be protected by this mechanism, “said Shahin. Expect the vaccine to protect against the virus for at least a year.
On Monday, manufacturers released interim results of clinical trials, according to which the vaccine’s effectiveness exceeds 90 percent. On Wednesday an agreement was reached between the manufacturers and the EU to supply 200 million doses of the vaccine and the possibility of receiving another 100 million doses of the drug in the EU. Vaccines for the EU will be produced at the bases of Biontech in Germany and Pfizer in Belgium.
