One person died and seven were injured, two of them seriously, in a series of cold steel attacks on the British city of Birmingham, carried out early this morningReuters reported, citing a police statement.
“We can confirm that we have launched an investigation into the murder after the events of last night,” West Midlands County Police said. “A man was killed, another man and a woman were seriously injured. Five others were injured,” BTA reported.
British Foreign Secretary Dominique Raab said there was no information on whether the incident was related to terrorism, but said society should be vigilant.
West Midlands County Police received a report of a cold steel attack in central Birmingham around 12:30 pm Shortly after, they received a signal for further attacks in the area. Police cordons cut three parts of the city center.
A witness saw a knife near a drainage canal in one of the closed streets.
According to West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, the series of attacks appears to be related, but it is not yet clear what motivated them.
Police are looking for a single suspect in the cold steel attacks, Reuters reported.
The victims of the attacks appear to have been selected at random, police said. There is no indication that the incidents are directed against a particular group, and no evidence of gang ties.
