The international certification and classification company Det Norske Veritas – DNV GL has confirmed the termination of all certification activities for the Nord Stream-2 pipeline due to new US sanctions. This was announced today by company spokesman Robert Kovni, quoted by TASS.
“In November 2020, DNV stopped providing services to the vessels serving Nord Stream 2. Our company is about to suspend all activities to inspect the gas pipeline system,” the company said.
They note that this statement was made after the adoption of new legislation in the United States, according to which companies that provide Nord Stream-2 testing, inspection or certification services are subject to sanctions.
On January 1, the provisions of the defense budget came into force in the United States, including the extension of sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 and Turkish Stream gas pipelines, recalls TASS.
The Nord Stream-2 project involves the construction of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. So far, 94 percent of the pipeline has been built. The work was completed in December 2019 after the Swiss company Allseas abandoned the laying of pipes due to possible US sanctions.
However, a year later, on December 11, 2020, work was resumed with the Russian ship Fortuna, which laid the pipes in Germany’s exclusive economic zone.
